September is the main tall fescue window
Cooler air and warm soil create useful establishment conditions for tall fescue. Aeration opens compacted soil, while seed placed during the same visit can reach loosened soil more effectively.
Moist—not muddy—soil, clearly marked obstacles, and a watering plan should all be settled before service day. A renovation succeeds through the preparation and aftercare, not from seed alone.
Part 02
Keep the seedbed damp, then taper
New seed begins at the surface. During early germination, short and even irrigation cycles help maintain moisture without runoff. As seedlings establish, watering should gradually become deeper and less frequent.
Wait to mow until new grass reaches roughly four inches, mow only when dry, and make wide turns. Weed control usually waits until the new lawn has been mowed three times and the product label permits it.
Part 03
Leaves, weeds, and warm-season dormancy
Blow leaves from tender seedlings rather than dragging a rake through them. Light layers can be mulched later, but heavy leaves should not remain long enough to mat the turf.
Bermuda and zoysia naturally turn tan after frost. Stop pushing growth, keep leaves clear, and use fall weed treatment only when it is appropriate for the grass and any newly seeded areas.

Common questions
A few answers before you download.
How late can tall fescue be seeded in Nashville?
The main window runs from late August to mid-October. Seeding later reduces the time young plants have to establish before cold weather.
Should aeration plugs be removed?
No. Leave normal soil cores on the lawn so weather and mowing can break them down naturally.
Can I use weed preventer when I seed?
Most pre-emergent products also stop grass seed. Follow the label and keep ordinary preventers off areas being seeded.
