Start with the grass, not the month
Tall fescue stays green through much of winter and grows in clumps. Because it does not spread to repair thin areas, fall seeding can be an important part of maintaining density.
Bermuda and zoysia turn tan after frost, then spread actively once warm weather returns. Their feeding and core-aeration work belongs in late spring and summer, when the turf can recover quickly.
At a glance
- Tall fescue: cool-season growth, fall renovation
- Bermuda: sun-loving, fast-spreading warm-season turf
- Zoysia: dense warm-season turf with slower growth
Part 02
The year in four decisions
Spring is for timely crabgrass prevention, light fescue feeding, mower preparation, and waiting for full green-up before feeding warm-season grass.
Summer is survival season for fescue and active-growth season for Bermuda and zoysia. Fall is the main fescue renovation window. Winter is the time to protect dormant turf, clear leaves, test soil, and plan ahead.
Part 03
Use natural cues when weather shifts
Calendar dates are useful, but Nashville weather changes from year to year. Forsythia bloom, soil temperature, green-up, humid nights, and the first and last freezes are more useful signals than an inflexible date.
The downloadable calendar brings these cues together with mowing heights, feeding schedules, irrigation targets, aeration windows, and a quick-reference problem guide.

Common questions
A few answers before you download.
What is the most important season for a Nashville tall fescue lawn?
Fall is the main renovation and feeding season. Late August through mid-October is the useful aeration and seeding window, with September commonly preferred.
When should Bermuda or zoysia be aerated?
Late May through early July, while warm-season turf is actively growing and able to recover.
Is one calendar right for every Nashville lawn?
No. Grass type, sun, slope, soil, irrigation, and recent weather all change the practical plan. Use the guide as a framework and adjust to the property.
