March: wake the lawn up carefully

Tall fescue resumes growth early. Begin mowing as needed, keep it tall, and avoid a heavy spring fertilizer push that can trade root development for soft leaf growth before summer.

Forsythia bloom is a useful local cue for crabgrass preventer. Follow the product label, water it in as directed, and remember that most preventers also interfere with grass seed establishment.

April and May: treat cool- and warm-season lawns differently

Tall fescue receives its second and final light spring feeding before heat and humidity increase disease pressure. Water only when the lawn shows stress, and begin raising the mowing height as summer approaches.

Bermuda and zoysia should not be pushed with nitrogen while partially dormant. Wait for full green-up, then begin their warm-season program. Late May opens the practical core-aeration window for these grasses.

Spring seeding is a backup, not the main plan

Small fescue repairs may be possible in late winter or early spring, but young plants have little time to establish before Nashville heat. Large renovation work usually has better odds in fall.

If an area will be seeded, make sure its weed-prevention plan is compatible with seed. Product labels control, and the full PDF explains the timing conflict in plain language.

Common questions

A few answers before you download.

When does crabgrass preventer go down in Nashville?

Use soil temperature and forsythia bloom as the cue rather than a fixed date. The guide explains a practical two-application approach and how to water it in.

Should tall fescue be heavily fertilized in spring?

No. Tall fescue generally benefits from a light spring approach, with its main feedings reserved for fall.

Can Bermuda and zoysia be aerated in spring?

Wait until active growth. The preferred window begins in late May and extends into early July.
